Let’s follow the sunnah – Eating habits of Rasulullah SAW

Rasulullah SAW was the greatest man that has ever lived. As a Muslim, it is a bonus for us to follow his deeds even in the simplest things . That is why we should strive to follow his sunnah in everything that we do including his eating principles . Although he only lived to the age of 63, he was never reported to have experienced any cases of stomach ache or any severe illness. This greatness can only be achieved by acknowledging the fact that our beloved Rasulullah SAW was a good dietitian himself!
Let’s take a look at some of his many great eating habits:
1) Muhammad SAW did not eat preserved or raw food. With the hectic lifestyle that we are having now, we always resort to canned, preserved or fast food. The logical reason behind this is that canned or preserved food contains extra chemicals and unnecessary salt. Raw food on the other hand contains germs and bacteria that might be carriers of fatal viruses. The only food that are allowed to be consumed raw in the shareeah are fish and grasshoppers.
2) Our prophet never eats more than two dishes in a meal. He was not fond of eating too many mixed dishes and strongly bans eating food that originated from land and sea in the same plate. We should avoid providing guests with these meals. Furthermore, this is a  good way in order not to waste any food.
3) Muhammad SAW eats using his fingers and licks his fingers after meals. A new scientific research has proofed that our hands (especially the right hand) has enzymes that is also found in our saliva. In simpler words, the digestion process actually begins in our fingers as they break down the food that we eat. A simple showcase of this phenomenon is to dip our hands in a bow of water. Then put inside some fresh vegetables. Compare the vegetables in this bowl and another one that has been put in fresh water. You’ll notice that the vegetables in the water dipped with your hands wilts faster than the other one.
4) The Prophet told us not to cool hot meals by blowing on it. There is actually a hadeeth regarding this matter. The solid reason is that when we blow on our meals, the carbon dioxide from our breath fuses with water vapour created by the hot meal. This creates a carbon dioxide droplets that are heavy enough and will drop and enter into our food. This is actually a good way for us to teach ourselves to be patient.
5) The Prophet prohibits us from eating food that is covered with dirt. In a hadeeth, it is mentioned that if our food falls to the ground, we need to immediately pick them up and dust away the dirt on the food. Then we can continue to eat it. Shaytan will immediately eat the food. We surely don’t want to share part of the food with the devil don’t we?
6) Muhammad SAW mentioned that “the worst parts that you can eat from an animal are its head and stomach”. This is of course related to the animal’s anatomy. Mammals and most other animals will discrete toxins in their liver and stomach just like us. Therefore, preventing ourselves from eating internal organs is still the best solution
7) The holy Prophet prohibits us from leaning against something while eating. This he said, was a bad habit from the Roman emperors. This is just as bad as lying while eating and will cause disturbance to the digestion process.
8) Walk after you eat! In a famous Hadeeth, Rasulullah mentioned “Don’t sleep on your food”. This saying is interpreted as not to sleep after we eat. Walking after eating helps the digestion process. With a minimum of 40 steps, we should feel better in the stomach area (after a burp or two. Yikes!)
There you go. 8 easy deeds did by the holy Prophet. Lets practice his good eating habits and obtain reward from our Lord for following his Sunnah.
